My book Naked the Hague focuses entirely on our body image. With 330 photographs and personal stories, Hagenaars expose themselves literally and figuratively.
It is a sequel to Naked Rotterdam that I realized in 2017 as part of my Masters in Photography.
'For several years Naked Rotterdam has been in my studio and is eagerly read by everyone who comes by. First the curiosity and then comes that connecting message, because with clothes on people distinguish themselves and when we are naked we turn out to be pretty much the same... Naked has become such a taboo, and why really?'
William Rutten (1970) – Celebrity fotograaf en jurylid bij ‘Het Perfecte Plaatje’.
Naked Rotterdam made me realize how prevalent the feeling of “not meeting the norm in terms of appearance” is in our society and how many people are burdened by that feeling. (Social media plays an important, negative, role in this.) That is why I decided 6 years after Naked Rotterdam, to make yet another ‘Naked’ version, completely focused on the theme of body image. So that became Naked The Hague with the goal of combating insecurity about our bodies. It was given the subtitle “Vulnerable Exposure Against Perfection.
I chose The Hague because it is my hometown and my photo studio is located there.
Naked Rotterdam was a tribute to American artist Greg Friedler (1970 – 2015) who made Naked New York, Naked los Angeles, Naked London and Naked Las Vegas.
The original concept of the Naked series revolves around identity. After all, we have a public identity and a private identity. In the Naked books, the public, clothed, portrait of each person is shown alongside the private, unclothed, portrait. Furthermore, the viewer reads that person’s occupation and age.
